IFAD: Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors: Replenishment IFAD 11 successfully completed


Rome, 14 February 2018 - The replenishment negotiations for IFAD 11 (2019-2021) were completed last week. The Board of Governors confirmed the results in its subsequent Meeting.

Member States expressed high appreciation for IFAD's work.

The reform course pursued by President Houngbo to strengthening efficiency and effectiveness and introducing new financing instruments has received broad support.

Major donors announced an increase in their contributions; for the first time, also concessional loans were pledged.

Key areas, also important for Germany, were successfully anchored in the IFAD 11 strategy:

  • focus on Africa and fragile states;
  • tackling root causes of migration;
  • climate-resilient agriculture;
  • support for the G-20 youth employment initiative in rural areas launched under the German Presidency.

Youth employment was a central theme of the IFAD Board of Governors.

The German governor,  director General,  Dominik Ziller, BMZ, emphasized in the panel discussion that

it is crucial to combine rural development with technologies and innovations,  to create lasting and attractive life prospects for young people and  to ensure global Nutrition.
