75 years ago representatives of 50 states worldwide signed the Charter of the United Nations in San Francisco after two months of negotiations.
The United Nations is celebrating this special anniversary under the motto: “The future we want, the United Nations we need - Reaffirming our common commitment to multilateralism”.
Guided by the conviction that common solutions are better, more sustainable and fairer than national solo efforts, we want to strengthen the values of the United Nations, which were enshrined in the UN Charter 75 years ago.
Even in troubled times, Germany remains an advocate of this multilateralism, with the United Nations at its centre.
As one of today's 193 Member States, Germany stands by its special commitment to the United Nations: as the fourth largest contributor, as a troop contributor to UN peace missions, as a UN location and, since early 2019, for the sixth time as an elected member of the UN Security Council.
Together with like-minded people - in the Security Council, but also in the Alliance for Multilateralism - we provide impetus and thus prove that we can actually find multilateral solutions.
In this way the Federal Foreign Office can underscore our appreciation of the UN, especially on the 75th anniversary of the signing of the Charter.
We are delighted that you have found your way to its virtual atrium and would like to welcome you to our Exhibition.
We take a look back into the history of the United Nations and focus on how the United Nations works, what instruments it has at its disposal and what role Germany plays in the United Nations.
In particular, we would like to look into the future of the United Nations and invite you to share your thoughts with us.
We look forward to your suggestions on how we can jointly advance our work to strengthen the United Nations and promote rule-based multilateralism.
