The ERC will gather FAO Members in the Europe and Central Asia region, as well as representatives of United Nations Funds, Programmes and Specialized Agencies.

The meeting will include observers from intergovernmental and non-governmental sectors, research and academia, the private sector and civil society.

FAO Strategic Framework for 2022–2031

The meeting will provide an overview of how the FAO Strategic Framework for 2022-2031 contributes to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development through the transformation towards more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agri-food systems.

Discussion round at ministerial level

Following on from

  • the United Nations 2023 Food Systems Assessment,
  • the 2023 Sustainable Development Summit,
  • the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2023 (COP28),
  • the Samarkand Declaration and
  • the recent Global Forum on Food and Agriculture 2024,

a ministerial roundtable will explore the role of innovation and digitalization in strengthening resilient and low-emission agri-food systems in Europe and Central Asia.

In view of climate change and the many challenges, the ministers want to exchange ideas on preserving agricultural biodiversity and improving efficient water management.

Side Event

A further side event will focus on cost accounting in the agri-food sector to enable a better understanding and appreciation of the hidden costs and benefits of these systems and to provide decision-makers with the information they need to make the transition to sustainability.

Online survey

In the run-up to the ERC meeting, members will also be invited to discuss a wide range of topics through a written, dynamic online process, including

  • the global and regional outlook for food security
  • the opportunities for building resilience through transforming agri-food systems,
  • key issues and lessons learned in addressing food loss and waste; and
  • ways to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of decentralized FAO offices in the region.

Background Information

Regional Conferences are an official forum where Ministers of Agriculture and other high-level officials from all Member States of the region meet to discuss food and agriculture challenges in order to promote regional coherence.

The Regional Conferences are held every two years in the years when the FAO Global Conference does not meet for a regular session.

Agriculture ministers or other high-ranking representatives of the member countries of the FAO Europe and Central Asia region take part.

Non-governmental and intergovernmental organizations may be invited to participate as observers.
