Welcome
World Food Day on 16 October 2024
Rome, 16 October 2024 - Food is the third most basic human need after air and water – everyone should have the right to adequate food.
World Food Day marks the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 1945.
Today, the anniversary is an international event dedicated to promoting food security and combating hunger in the world.
World Food Day is celebrated by all member states of the United Nations.
The aim of World Food Day is to promote global awareness and action for the hungry and to reaffirm the need for healthy food for all.
Background Information
Since 1981, World Food Day has had a different theme every year in order to draw attention to necessary areas of action and to set a common focus.
The FAO issues World Food Day medals every year to recognize and promote the anniversary.
Most of the themes revolve around agriculture, as investment in agriculture - together with support for education and health - can bring about a positive change in the current crisis.
The theme for 2024 is „Water is Life, Water is Food“, which highlights the crucial role of water for life on earth and water as the basis for our food.
