50 Years of Germany in the United Nations
Germany joined the United Nations on September 18, 1973, marking a significant step back into the international community.
Germany is committed to the principles of the UN Charter and participates in numerous bodies and peacekeeping missions. It has served five times as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, most recently in 2019/2020, and is again a candidate for 2027/2028.

German contributions to the UN
Germany has continuously expanded its engagement throughout its membership. Bonn is the headquarters of numerous UN bodies.
For 2024, the UN budget is about $3.59 billion, of which Germany contributes 6.11% (about $219 million), making it the fourth largest contributor. Germany also contributes 6.11% to the budgets of peacekeeping missions, again ranking fourth.
In addition, Germany makes mandatory contributions to the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, as well as substantial voluntary contributions to humanitarian projects and crisis prevention. In 2022, Germany paid more than €6.8 billion to the UN, making it one of the largest donors.
Commitment to peace
Germany's participation in UN missions is a central component of its foreign and peace policy.
Germany contributes soldiers, police officers and qualified civilian personnel and supports stabilization measures as well as diplomatic mediation efforts. Currently, some 400 German personnel are deployed in various missions, such as in Lebanon (UNIFIL), South Sudan (UNMISS), Western Sahara (MINURSO) and Kosovo (UNMIK).
Security Council Reforms
The German government is committed to reforming the Security Council to address the geopolitical realities of the 21st century. Together with Brazil, India, and Japan (G4), Germany advocates for this reform.
