National Strategies and International Projects for Food Security
The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) is committed to promoting a healthy and balanced diet both nationally and internationally.
The BMEL makes an active contribution to food security and climate protection at bilateral and multilateral level.
In doing so, it focuses on safe food, transparent consumer information and sustainable agriculture, forestry and fisheries.
It also promotes sustainable animal husbandry and strengthens global food security - supported by partnerships with research and science.

International Projects
As an international player, the BMEL makes an important contribution to food security and climate protection with its agricultural policy competence and expertise, both within the Federal Government and as a reliable partner at bilateral and multilateral level.
Through its participation in international climate-food partnerships and cooperation with the FAO, the transformation of global agricultural and food systems is being driven forward.
Further information can be found here.
- Bilateral Trust Fund (BTF) with the FAO
Since 2002, the BMEL has been supporting the FAO with the Bilateral Trust Fund (BTF) to promote food security and sustainable agriculture. Since then, a total of 140 projects have been implemented to support countries in securing a qualitatively and quantitatively balanced diet.
The BTF serves as a voluntary commitment by the Federal Republic of Germany to implement the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Together with local partners and the FAO, it contributes to the realization of the right to food both at the political level and through concrete projects.

- Shaping the future together - Examples from our international project work
2024 marks a special anniversary: 20 years ago, the FAO adopted the “Voluntary Guidelines in Support of the Human Right to Adequate Food”, which are groundbreaking for international project work.
They aim to ensure the equitable and sustainable development of food systems in order to secure access to nutritious food for disadvantaged population groups. In recent years, additional guidelines have been developed, e.g. on agroecology and the promotion of women and youth, which support the goal of food sovereignty and climate resilience.
All future international BMEL projects will be guided by these principles of agroecology in order to make local farming systems more sustainable and participatory.
