Permanent Missions – Germany’s Diplomacy at International Organizations

Article

Permanent missions differ from embassies in that they are Germany’s official diplomatic offices at the United Nations and other international organizations.

Embassies manage bilateral relations with individual countries, while permanent missions represent Germany’s interests in multilateral bodies, where many countries negotiate and cooperate.

One such location is Rome, which is home to three major United Nations organizations focused on food and agriculture.

  • Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)
  • World Food Programme (WFP)
  • International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)

Led by Ambassador Andreas von Brandt, the mission works across different government departments. The team includes staff from the Federal Foreign Office (AA), the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMLEH), and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Together, they represent the German government’s positions in the multilateral work of these UN organizations, coordinated and backed by their respective expertise.

Their main areas of focus include global food security, sustainable rural development, and humanitarian assistance. They place a special emphasis on the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Adopted by the United Nations, these goals provide a shared roadmap for achieving greater justice, sustainability, and quality of life worldwide. They include clear targets for fighting hunger and poverty, protecting the environment, and promoting education and equality. Many of these topics are also central to the work of UN organizations based in Rome.

As one of the leading donors, Germany contributes expertise and resources to support multilateral programs. The country works with partners to develop effective solutions.
