This process began in 2020, when the United Nations celebrated its 75th anniversary. In the midst of the corona pandemic, the member states turned to UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

The heads of state and government called on him to “identify the gaps in the existing multilateral system and make recommendations for future solutions,” said Antje Leendertse, Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations in New York.

In 2021, Guterres presented “Our Common Agenda”, a wake-up call to the international community that called for the unconditional achievement of the 17 sustainability goals. Guterres also called for a future summit to be held in September 2024.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) already adopted in 2015 remain the guidelines for the UN Future Summit.

Background information

Germany plays a central role at the UN Future Summit, as it prepares and moderates the negotiations together with Namibia.

The Federal Government stresses the importance of international cooperation and the will to develop the international order together with its partners.

Independent of the UN Future Summit, the Federal Government is committed to reforms in the United Nations, including in the UN Security Council.

This was last reformed 60 years ago. Since then, Germany has been reunited and around 60 countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia have taken the path to independence.

They rightly call for a voice and an appropriate role in the international security structure.
