Virtual meeting on the FAO report on global food security (SOFA) on 8 November 2024
Rome, 8 November 2024 – On the upcoming Friday, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will present its annual report on the State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA).
In 2023, a report highlighted that the global hidden costs of agrifood systems had surpassed $10 trillion.
The 2024 edition builds on this by offering a more nuanced analysis of these challenges, including a closer look at the factors driving these costs and a detailed breakdown of health impacts. It specifically examines 13 dietary risk factors linked to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), suggesting potential policy approaches to mitigate these health issues.
The 2024 report also explores “value-driven” agrifood system transformation, with case studies on true cost accounting (TCA). This approach focuses on decisions that maximize societal value, extending beyond GDP to reflect agrifood systems’ contributions to nutrition, biodiversity, carbon storage, and cultural heritage.
- The release of the FAO flagship report State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA) 2024 will take place on November 8, 2024, at 12:30 PM (CET) as an online event.
- To attend the event via Zoom, please register here.
- Alternatively, you can follow the event live on the FAO webcast.
FAO Director-General QU Dongyu will give the opening remarks, followed by a presentation of the report by the FAO’s Agrifood Economics Division.
Background Information
The SOFA report is published annually and serves as an important tool for assessing global progress in combating hunger and malnutrition. It contains comprehensive analyses of trends in nutrition and food production, as well as the impacts of policy measures.
For the first time, FAO’s flagship report addresses the same theme for two years in a row, emphasizing the urgent need to transform agrifood systems toward sustainability.
